Solid Waste Removal & Recycle Committee Meeting Minutes

Meeting date:
Wednesday, October 19, 2022

Members present: Ron Morales, Dan Guilmette, Rob Caron

Attendees: Pete Lachapelle (WM)

Chairman Ron called the meeting to order at 4:01 PM.

Bulk Waste:  The September pick up was 8.03 tons vs. 6.31 tons in 2021.  Bulk Waste for the year was 13.44 tons.

White Goods/eWaste:  The October pick up had 47 stickers sold for a total of $940.  However, only 40 pickups were made.  The group theorizes that once items were put out by the roadside, folks driving by may have picked them up.

Budget 2022:  Through December, the Contract Services account may be over by approximately $5,000.  The Curbside Collection account is also projected to be over budget by as much as $12,000.  The first 6 months, were favorable to budget, but the latter part of 2022 is a challenge.  Current recycle market pricing costs are volatile and the market is impossible to forecast.  The approved mid-year inflationary price increases were not budgeted, and are the main contributing factors.  However, it is predicted that the budget for 2022 should be achieved.

Budget 2023:  Final proposed numbers to Grace by 11/9.  The 2023 contract pricing will be used for the budget.  Recycle costs will be budgeted as the market dictates and higher than the current $75/ton.  The recycle market is impossible to forecast, but reasonable assumptions will be made.

Field Trip:  The field trip to WM, originally scheduled for this past spring, will be rescheduled for the spring of 2023.

Stipends:  Stipends were discussed briefly.  Based on the economy, and the projected increases in both the Town’s and Cooperative School budgets, this item is being tabled and will be revisited in 2024.

Meeting dates for 2023:  Meetings will be held at the Pound School at 4 PM.  The public is invited to attend.
